Q: We can has cheezburger?
Dagnab chickens were eyeing my lunch.
Look, they've got perfectly good food of their own. I gave 'em a bunch this morning... a mixture of youngster crumbles and (despite the "puppy chow for a full year, till he's full grown" instructions) grown-up pellets, just to make sure they'll eat the stuff when the time comes. No worries; they devoured both, to the extent that I'll have to give them more soon, and also make another Tractor Supply run, maybe tomorrow, to restock on the baby food (because they definitely are still growing).
As you get farther into this keep in mind that chickens are easy.
Keeping them can be as cheap or expensive as you want... I guess if you are keeping them confined all the time it's not as cheap as it could be.

Given the predator population around here - coyotes, hawks, eagles, and whatnot - keeping them in a covered pen seems like the safest approach.
Much of this year's garden is grains and legumes that can be used for feeding either people or poultry (and that should stockpile well).
