It would appear that the local Nextdoor is disproportionately populated by newcomers to the area, and by people with nothing better to do than to hang out on Internet fora.
Which means it attracts the blue-state blue-nosed biddies.
There's been an outbreak of complaints that someone was (gasp!) setting off fireworks on Christmas Eve! And the noise scared the dogs! Most places prohibit family fireworks, and the laws here will darn well have to change!
Er, yeah.
I didn't even hear any Christmas-Eve fireworks. It's winter, we had the windows closed by the time it got dark outside, and the house is pretty well insulated both thermally and acoustically, as I assume are all modern houses. Did these people have their windows open? How do those dogs react to thunderstorms? Is it possible that the dogs were reacting to their people's reaction to the little bit of noise that makes it indoors, and not to the noise itself?
Anyway, it seems that fireworks on Christmas Eve are a well-established custom in East Tennessee. (I'd previously heard of such a thing in parts of Europe, so it's not exactly unique.) Certainly Independence Day fireworks should come as no surprise. Did these newcomers do no research into the local culture before moving here?
Sounds pretty imperialistic to me. Move to a new place, and demand that the natives give up their culture and adopt yours! Because you're Enlightened, and they're a bunch of benighted heathens!
Also sounds like that classic psycho ex who insisted that she loved you and couldn't live without you, and also that everything about you was wrong and would have to change, right?
Next thing you know, they'll be bad-mouthing Dolly Parton.
Oh, and I recall a culture problem in rural California, back in the 1990s. City slickers were moving to the countryside and letting their dogs run free, because why not? Some of the dogs attacked livestock, with the result that ranchers started shooting loose dogs. Gotta learn about the local laws and customs before deciding where to move, folks!
Hm. I'd better start keeping a close eye on local politics. I don't want an organized Corporatist / Fascist slate taking over the county government and changing everything.
