Got the new flagpole assembled, rigged, and placed, and the flag attached.
But... the flag, after a bit over a year at the windy corner of the house, is rather tattered. Also, it looks a bit small up there.
So, new flag, one size larger, is on order. (A big flagpole like that could stand two sizes larger, but that'd be a two-Boy-Scout project to deploy and retrieve the flag, and I'm not even one Boy Scout.)
If the current forecast is to be believed, the old flag will remain there until a week from Monday or thereabouts. The flags may be all-weather, but I'm not.
I probably should have bought a one size shorter pole, but didn't really have a good handle on what it was going to look like, and at one point I was intending to put it on significantly lower ground. The way this pole is built, leaving out a section isn't an option.
Update: Oop. Definitely should have gone for a one size shorter, and maybe heavier, pole. With the wind getting up to 15-ish MPH so far this Monday morning, the pole was looking awfully bendy. It'd be even worse with a bigger flag.
Perhaps I could omit the bottom segment, which should help a bit. Also, I think my rigging could be improved on, though that wouldn't affect the bendiness of the pole. And... I gotta re-examine the base situation. Could be the socket really needs to be set in concrete.
Update 2: Deleting the bottom segment should help. Also, the socket definitely needs to be potted in something a lot harder than clay-and-gravel. I've been meaning to obtain a few bags of fencepost mix (but probably not this week, given the potentially rainy weather). And I need to come up with some sort of shimming scheme for putting the one-step-up segment in the socket; it's a somewhat wobbly fit. The cleat needs to be moved up again. Always details....
