I believe smoke detectors are both hard wired and have a battery back up.

Yeah, these do seem to have some sort of replaceable backup battery. I guess I should make the rounds with a stepstool - first to confirm what sort of battery they take, then to install replacements after (if necessary) ordering a batch. I think they're 9V, which isn't something of which we keep a large supply.
