Out mowing one of the irregular patches yesterday afternoon - this a patch of mixed vegetation wherefrom I'd uprooted a bunch of posts a while back - I noticed that a vacant post-hole over which I'd just mowed was emitting vast quantities of angry little buzzers. Yellowjackets, maybe? I wasn't about to take a close look.
Nasties nesting in the ground, well away from structures? Yeah, that's a job for a flamethrower, all right.
In reality, I stopped by after spraying bifenthrin on some rock walls and the truck, set the sprayer for a narrow stream, and hosed down the area from a distance. Maybe it'll have some effect.
(No, I'm not going to load up a garden sprayer with gasoline. I'm trying to keep safe just now, OK? Wasps: not safe. Improvised flamethrower: very not safe.)
