Plural of growf. More'n one, like.
Slow-motion cellphone breakage aside....
Down to the basement this morning. Feels... damp. Dehumidifier is running; shows 63%, set for 50%; so well it should be. But, I see no water dribbling out of its drain hose. Lost its refrigerant, maybe? Guess I should take a look, see if there's anything obviously fixable, and otherwise order another big dehumidifier with a drain-hose connection.
Setting that aside: it's a non-rainy morning, so a good time to load up the truck with accumulated recyclables and head off to the county dropoff center. Oopsie! Been a policy change, announced on signs placed in front of the bins. Seems they were getting too much contaminated stuff, so they're now only accepting plastic bottles and jugs and aluminum cans. I brought bags of those, but there are steel cans mixed in, and I don't feel like sorting through the stuff on the spot. Says on the sign that cardboard and mixed paper now go in the household garbage for composting.
So, back home, unload the truck into the garage, stuff a bunch of the mixed paper into kitchen trash bags (previously used for hauling bottles & cans), lug the bags down to the road, and toss 'em in the garbage can, this being pickup day and pickup not yet having happened.
I guess I can cut up all that flattened cardboard, stuff it into large bags, and haul a couple of truckloads a week to the neighborhood garbage dropoff.
Oh, and the county recycling website hasn't been updated to reflect the new policy, so even had I checked ahead of time the new signs at the dropoff center would have come as a surprise.
... Oog. This is going to make the garbage can even heavier for the weekly drag down to the road.
All this before 0900. I wonder what the rest of the day will bring.
Update: Current dehumidifier (which, IIRC, is the one that came with the house and wasn't exactly new at the time) is supposed to handle 70 pints/day; it's doing something, but that dribble emerging from the hose couldn't add up to a single pint per day. So, time for a new one. Off to do some on-line shopping.
Update 2: New basement dehumidifier with decent reviews should be here Thursday. Past time to make a new appointment to get the Venerable Prius's fuel leak fixed. Call the dealership, get the phone maze. Press 2 for the service department. The menu repeats. And repeats. No matter when during nor after the announcement I press 2, I get get the menu again.
Joy got into the same thing yesterday, calling the UT medical center to reschedule my father's appointment for today that wasn't on our calendar but for which I'd gotten a text-message reminder after hours on Friday. She eventually did manage to get connected to a human, but that might have been a matter of just staying on the line until something timed out.
Update 2a: Check the dealership's web site. Aha! This shows a different number for the service department. Call that number. Get a robot offering a special promotion on medical alert bracelets. WTF???? Click on the "Parts and Service" link; get the service department's site, which still shows the old number, that being the one with the unresponsive maze.
Huh. Joy made that call yesterday on my phone, not hers, because mine had the message with the call-to-reschedule number. I wonder if my phone is no longer sending DTMF correctly, in addition to the delamination thing. How could that happen? A wonky firmware update?
Update 2b: Tried the call again with my phone; no good. Tried with Joy's phone, and it worked. Guess I really do need a new phone. Car has an appointment for Thursday. Now I need to arrange a tow, hope the car can be gotten onto the tow truck, and also hope the weather cooperates (Thursday forecast is for afternoon thunderstorms; tow should be in the morning).
