We had a fairly fierce thunderstorm last night, with 25 MPH wind (as reported by the weather station by the side fence, which doesn't report peaks as such) and quite a bit of rain.
We'd had some rain a few days ago, too, with the regrettable consequence that the grass had started growing again, so I had to do some mowing yesterday before the storm arrived. While I was out there...
Backing those few days: when the last bit of rain turned up, the weather station didn't record it. At all. I guessed maybe there were wasps nesting in the rain gauge or something, and figured I'd have to haul a ladder out there sometime soon and take a look.
Well, as I was mowing in that area, I encountered a round black plastic thing among the grass. Luckily, I encountered it visually and not lawnmower-bladeally. A bit of contemplation, and I realized that it was the funnel meant to guide water into the rain gauge; must have blown off in some earlier blast of wind.
So, this morning (having missed last night's rain) I hauled a ladder out there and re-installed the funnel, making sure it was properly latched. Maybe I should have used a bit of stickum, just to make sure. Anyway, turns out the pole has gotten a mite wobbly, so I guess I'd better do something to brace it - perhaps drive a couple of T-posts next to it and apply some stout wire; that seem to work for small trees (except that, for the trees, I don't use nasty bark-cutting wire).
Supposed to be a dry day today, with probable rain tomorrow and for the following couple of days. Got some urgent outdoors stuff done this morning before the temperature got excessive. Maybe I'll do some more mowing this afternoon (hat, and lots of sunscreen). Or... maybe not; what if Frigidaire calls while I'm doing noisy stuff?
Then, too, the recent rain has further eroded the driveway, some sometime soon I gotta give it another scrape with the box blade (before swapping the box blade for the tiller and resuming the backyard Tonka project, first on hold because I'd run into nasty hard clay but now on extra hold because the clay has accumulated a puddle and become a slippery patch o' mud). That, though, is another high-noise activity, and must wait until I'm not expecting any important phone calls.
