I'm not sure how it is in Tennessee but in Minnesota the ticks lived in the tall grass (hay field) come spring. We had to keep it mowed to keep the ticks down.
FWIW we had a baby food jar with a little alcohol in it on top of the fridge, that was the place where you dropped the ticks you found.

Come to think of it, the tall grass around the Bay Area is a tick haven too.
Sounds like another reason to have some well-kept walking paths.
