Adding a pressure sensor to a sprinkler valve - heck, even just adding one sensor to the manifold, assuming flow is limited by upstream plumbing - would allow a smart controller to detect a break (the pressure now is much less than it was on the last run, and the baseline hasn't been reset by a manual ON command for this station), shut down, and alert the owner.
On this occasion, I detected the problem acoustically, on account of the soaker system unexpectedly being much louder than usual. I think a pressure sensor would be a more reliable approach.
