The critters thought a fathom of ribbon was a fine toy; alas, 'twas ribbon I was attempting to use for wrapping a gift. Ergo, it must be time to provide a Distraction.
Grab some giftwrap tissue, two new catnip mice, the new Official Redshirt Wobble Mouse, and some new high-class kibble that they might regard as treats. Retreat to the bedroom. Do some hasty giftwrapping. Emerge.
They somehow don't grok the business of tearing the paper off, despite their penchant for playing destructively with any paper they can get their teeth into.
Huckleberry eventually gets his packet of treats open, and eats a little. I end up having to unwrap all the other things.
They haven't even tried to kill the redshirt yet. At least they're playing with one of the new mice. Or they were, until Southmoon found an open box and decided that sitting in the box was more fun than tossing a mouse around.
Oh, well. Sometime this week, I'll see about setting up their new Kindle Fire. Right now, it's time to head off to the Third Family Gathering. (No, there won't be a puppy under the tree. Nor a hippopotamus, nor yet an Australopithecus.)
Update: Third Family Gathering survived. Got the rest of the day for relaxing, and maybe doing something more or less productive (like getting all my Subversion working copies synchronized with the repositories, the SVN server shut down, the repositories backed up, and the backups transmitted to the new server - much of which involves unattended computer time).
Update 2: Huckleberry will pounce on the redshirt, and play with it a bit, if he sees it beam down. Or, anyway, fly through the air and land at the end of the hallway. Top Hat likes the new catnip mice, and has been almost playing fetch with them - almost, in the sense that she'll bring one to me, wait for me to throw it, run after it (assuming I throw it far enough to be worth chasing)... but then bring it most of the way back, dropping it somewhat out of reach.
