I think they have the idea that things that are indoors and move under their own power are pets, i.e., family and not prey. There seems to be an exception for bugs, though.
Next spring they'll probably meet actual chicks. If they can behave themselves and play nice with small critters, that'll be a good thing.
Heck, maybe they can be trained to defend the flock, like sheepdogs. Chickencats?
