Remember that UFO I saw back in May?
Well, it showed up again a few days ago, over Cupertino, and I got a better look at it. Wings well aft, a definite swept tail, and a squared-off little canard.
It didn't actually have engines in pods aft of the wings; it had an engine on each wing, making propeller noises.
This earned it an upgrade to More-Identified Flying Object, but I was still baffled, and thinking it was maybe a unique homebuilt or something. I mean, really: a tail and a canard?
This afternoon, I saw it parked at the Palo Alto airport, and snapped a picture of it (which is on my camera, which I left at my parents' house this evening).
A pusher prop behind each wing, a T-tail, and a droopy little canard that makes it look like a catfish. And it's pretty big, too... and definitely not a hobbyist contraption.
Well, I did some looking around, and it turns out it's a Piaggio P.180 Avanti. An Identified, Tied-Down Object. And there's an X-Plane model of it, too (in fact, someone's just posted an improved version)... for sometime when I have free time again.
One less mystery in life....
